The era of 5G has brought spring to smart lamp posts
Date:2025/03/27 21:35:52    Publisher:ATZGlighting

5G means the construction of numerous densely distributed small base stations. From the perspectives of height, spacing, and power supply, city lamp posts are the natural match for 5G small base stations.

In the future, countless street lamps will be equipped with 5G base stations, transforming into an important infrastructure of smart cities, and intelligent lamp posts with multifunctional capabilities will become a beautiful landscape of the future city.

The 5G era is approaching, and streetlight poles around the world are emerging like bamboo shoots after a spring rain, just like the macro base stations of the past. Let's take a look at the streetlight poles in various places.

Smart streetlight + base station construction is being carried out in many regions around the world.

At the Japan Wireless Communication Technology Conference, Japanese operators explicitly stated that streetlight poles and manhole base stations are one of the major strategic priorities for 5G construction.

On April 10, 2018, the Ministry of Science and ICT of South Korea announced that SK, KT, and LG U+ will jointly build and share a 5G network. The article points out that due to limited urban space, the construction of 5G should make full use of various municipal infrastructure such as streetlights, utility poles, traffic lights, and billboards to accelerate the deployment of 5G, effectively utilize resources, and reduce redundant investment.

The pioneer in the construction of lamp post stations, of course, cannot be without China Tower. Earlier, China Tower had launched an intelligent lamp post that integrates environmental monitoring, intelligent surveillance, charging stations, and smart lighting...

It is learned that the Tower Company has secured 6 million poles as base station carriers, some by purchasing existing pole locations, and some by the Tower Company directly bearing the construction costs of the poles to obtain base station locations for free. Currently, tower companies in various regions are intensifying the promotion of this model.

In fact, domestic smart streetlights are similar to those in the United States, as they all have features such as camera monitoring, voice recognition, base station mounting (which can effectively place base station equipment inside the lamp post to ensure aesthetics), city WIFI, intelligent charging stations, positioning, and emergency calling, and are typical integrated lamp posts.

A variety of multifunctional smart streetlights have emerged domestically, such as:

In July 2017, 26 smart streetlights using the new generation of Internet of Things communication technology NB-IoT made their debut in Pudong.

Tai Long Zhixian completed the installation of the fourth batch of nearly 40 lamp post screens in Tianjin on June 26, making Tianjin the city with the largest usage of LED lamp post screens (smart streetlights) in the Chinese region.

Yujiatun Smart City Project becomes a model, street lamps act as the carrier of the Internet of Things.

On November 25, 2017, Meitaike (Beijing) Internet of Things Technology Co., Ltd. and China Mobile Internet Co., Ltd. collaborated to complete the NB-IoT smart lamp post demonstration project for Xiong'an Mobile in the Xiong'an New Area.

In September 2018, Sichuan Mobile's 5G smart lamp post was officially launched. The pole was developed by Sichuan Mobile in collaboration with Sichuan Energy Investment and China Mobile Design Institute, not only beautifyingly solving the loading of wireless base stations, but also carrying a variety of innovative smart applications.

The first phase of the Zhengzhou Airport Economic Zone intelligent streetlight transformation project covers nearly 4,000 streetlights, and as of April 2018, one-third has been completed.

December 9, 2017, Fangda Zhikong set up a special lamp post on the streets of Shenyang - the first intelligent lamp post in Northeast China landed in Shenyang.

Local governments are beginning to actively promote the planning and construction of 5G base stations and multi-functional intelligent poles. For example, the Tianjin Municipal Government has signed agreements with multiple operators and China Tower Corporation to accelerate the deployment of 5G networks. To build more base stations, Tianjin Tower Corporation has signed agreements with the Tianjin Municipal Public Security Bureau and the Tianjin Power Grid to allow the use of public security monitoring and streetlight poles to build small base stations. Tianjin will build no fewer than 10,000 5G base stations within the next 3 years through a co-construction and sharing approach.
